Yesterday I bought three DVDs from Astrovision. Yes, I like buying original DVDs especially the ones I really, really like. I bought the box set of The Mummy (3 DVDs), Silent Hill, and Taken. Whenever I buy DVDs I always open it up to see if there are any defections or missing disc then play it on my player.
Everything seems okay until I played Taken. I really, really like that movie but for some reasons I didn’t like Viva’s production of the DVD. I looked at the back of the case of the disc and there are some missing information about the movie. No aspect ratio of the film, no time run of the movie, no language subtitles, no sound channels infos (2.1 or 5.1), etc. Oh, but there is a Region symbol: ALL. WTH! I have a widescreen TV and it bothers me if the movie is in 4:3 ratio.
I’ve seen the movie Taken in the theatre just earlier this year even if it was released last year. I waited for the local DVD to come out at the same time downloaded a DivX just to see it again. The DVD came out and quickly bought it! My mistake, I didn’t ask if it was in widescreen.
I went out again today to the store to exchange it for the widescreen version. Sadly, no version of it yet. I told the people at Astrovision that I wanted the widescreen version, which I was expecting on the DVD I bought. They told me they get this alot, coz there were already complaints about Viva’s production of DVDs. Most buyers were looking for copies with subtitles that were produced by Viva but got upset until they found out that the features of the DVDs are incomplete.
This isn’t fair for everybody who buy original DVDs that were produced by Viva compare to those who get pirated ones with better copies .
So if you’re a DVD collector or just a movie fanatic, chose wisely buying DVDs produced locally by Viva Production Inc. They’re mostly crappy. But there are DVDs that are being distributed by Viva, these are not locally produced by the local company.
Optical Media Board should give any local companies (who legally produce DVDs) to make their productions in better quality. I don’t want to buy expensive, locally made DVDs with crappy features.
